Hanauma Water-Quality Decision

Fast Hanauma check for June 1, 2026: start with the live advisory box and 30-day history above, then confirm the official preserve schedule or reservation status. The current widget shows no DOH advisories in the past 30 days, but Hanauma can still be affected by recent rain, cloudy water, preserve closures, surf, visibility, or an island-wide advisory.

If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

Historical Bacteria Risk
⚠ Historical rating — this is based on long-term testing data, not current conditions. The state of Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories. Always check the water yourself and avoid brown or murky water.
Low Risk 1 / 5

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve has one of Oʻahu's lower historical bacteria-risk profiles. The bay is a protected marine life conservation district with limited daily visitors, no stream discharge, and strong tidal circulation through the reef opening.

Controlled access and the lack of a major stream mouth help explain the long-term pattern, but they do not replace current checks. Always confirm preserve status, recent rain, water color, surf, visibility, posted signs, lifeguard guidance, and live DOH advisories.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain, even if the water looks clear. Hanauma Bay is relatively well-protected from runoff because there are no major streams feeding into it, but island-wide heavy rain can still affect clarity and conditions. The preserve may close during severe weather or operational changes.

Visiting Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is not a typical beach — it operates as a marine conservation district with controlled access. Here is what you need to know:

Reservations Required
Check the official reservation system before going. Capacity rules and availability can change.
Confirm Same-Day Status
The preserve uses conservation closures and may close for weather, maintenance, or capacity. Confirm same-day status.
Mandatory Educational Video
All first-time visitors watch a 9-minute video about reef conservation before entering the bay.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen Only
Hawaii law prohibits sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. Bring mineral-based sunscreen or buy it at the park.
Why Hanauma Bay Often Rates Lower Risk

Hanauma Bay often has lower historical bacteria readings than many urban Oʻahu beaches. Three factors contribute:

No major stream discharge. Unlike Waikiki (Ala Wai Canal) or Kailua (Kawainui Marsh drainage), Hanauma Bay does not have a major stream mouth emptying into the swim area. That reduces one common bacteria pathway, but it does not remove the need for current checks.

Tidal flushing through the reef. The bay is a collapsed volcanic crater with an opening in the reef wall. Ocean water circulation helps the long-term pattern, while surf, rain, and visibility still affect same-day snorkeling.

Controlled visitor access. Reservation and capacity controls reduce pressure on the preserve. They are not a water-quality guarantee, so use this page with official preserve updates and posted guidance.
