If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

Low Risk 1 / 5

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is one of Oahu's cleanest swimming areas. The bay is a protected marine life conservation district with limited daily visitors (currently capped), no stream discharge, and strong tidal circulation through the reef opening.

The bay is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for reef recovery. Visitor capacity is limited and advance reservations are required. The controlled access and lack of nearby pollution sources contribute to consistently clean water quality. There is no significant cesspool or agricultural runoff affecting this beach.

Based on: DOH beach monitoring, protected marine preserve status, no stream discharge, controlled visitor access

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain, even if the water looks clear. Hanauma Bay is relatively well-protected from runoff because there are no major streams feeding into it. After island-wide heavy rain, some turbidity can occur from hillside runoff into the bay, but bacteria contamination is rare here. The bay may close during severe weather.

Visiting Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is not a typical beach — it operates as a marine conservation district with controlled access. Here is what you need to know:

Reservations Required
Book online in advance — walk-ups are rarely available. Capacity is capped to protect the reef.
Closed Mondays & Tuesdays
The bay is closed two days per week for reef recovery. Plan your visit accordingly.
Mandatory Educational Video
All first-time visitors watch a 9-minute video about reef conservation before entering the bay.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen Only
Hawaii law prohibits sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. Bring mineral-based sunscreen or buy it at the park.
Why Hanauma Bay Has Clean Water

Hanauma Bay consistently has some of the lowest bacteria levels on Oʻahu. Three factors contribute:

No stream discharge. Unlike Waikiki (Ala Wai Canal) or Kailua (Kawainui Marsh drainage), Hanauma Bay has no streams or storm drains emptying into it. The primary bacteria contamination pathway at most Hawaii beaches — cesspool and urban runoff carried by streams — simply does not exist here.

Tidal flushing through the reef. The bay is a collapsed volcanic crater with an opening in the reef wall. Ocean water circulates through this opening with each tidal cycle, replacing the bay water and preventing bacteria from accumulating.

Controlled visitor access. Capping daily visitors reduces the human impact on water quality. Before the reservation system was implemented, the bay received over 3,000 visitors per day — now it is significantly less.
