February Conditions at Haleiwa Beach
February Advisory Risk Moderate to High

Heavy winter rain increases Anahulu River discharge at Haleiwa Beach. Contaminated agricultural and residential runoff flows directly into the bay. Bacteria levels near the river mouth are frequently elevated.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

February continues heavy North Shore rainfall at 3-4 inches. The Anahulu River swells with contaminated runoff from upstream farms and residential areas. The historic rainbow bridge over the river mouth marks the contamination entry point to the bay.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Winter north swells affect the outer portions of Haleiwa Bay, though the inner beach park area stays more sheltered than exposed North Shore breaks. Water temperature is 75-77°F. The Anahulu River mouth creates variable currents.

👥 Crowd Levels

Moderate. Haleiwa Beach Park gets moderate use in winter. Most North Shore visitors head to the famous surf breaks. The beach park is popular with locals and families.

📌 February Notes
Humpback whale watching season is active. Whales are frequently visible from shore, especially on Maui's western and southern coasts. Peak whale activity is January through March.
The Anahulu River discharges at Haleiwa Beach, carrying contaminated runoff from the agricultural and residential watershed. Avoid swimming near the river mouth after rain. The historic rainbow bridge marks the river outfall location.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In february, this is especially important as wet-season storms can produce heavy rainfall and significant runoff.
