What to expect for water quality, rainfall, and ocean conditions
Dry weather means clear water and minimal runoff entering the bay. Snorkeling conditions and water quality are at their best.
August continues excellent snorkeling conditions. Water clarity is high with almost no rainfall. South swell events can temporarily reduce visibility near the sandy areas of the inner reef.
Summer brings the calmest conditions for snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. The protected bay has minimal wave action. Water temperature is warm (79-80°F). Visibility is excellent on calm days.
High. Summer is peak family travel season with school holidays. Beaches are busy from mid-morning through sunset.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In august, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
