April brings the transition to calmer ocean conditions at Hapuna. North swells decrease. The powerful shore break that defines winter eases. Water quality is excellent on the dry Kohala Coast.
Winter north swells create powerful shore break at Hapuna. Waves can reach 6-10+ feet and the steep beach face produces pounding surf that causes more injuries than any other beach on the Big Island. Swimming is dangerous on big swell days.
Moderate. The shoulder season between spring break and summer offers a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In april, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
