August Conditions at Hapuna Beach
August Advisory Risk Very Low

Hapuna Beach has one of the lowest advisory rates in Hawaii. The dry climate and lack of stream discharge mean water quality is consistently excellent.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

August continues peak season at Hapuna. Excellent swimming conditions with calm seas and clear water. The Kohala Coast is at its warmest and driest. Shore break is minimal.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Summer brings calm conditions to Hapuna with gentle shore break. Water is crystal clear and warm (79-80°F). The wide white sand beach and calm water make this the Big Island's premier swimming beach.

👥 Crowd Levels

High. Summer is peak family travel season with school holidays. Beaches are busy from mid-morning through sunset.

📌 August Notes
Hapuna is a state recreation area with lifeguards, picnic facilities, and parking ($5 per vehicle for non-residents). The wide beach rarely feels crowded even in summer.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In august, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
