December Conditions at Hapuna Beach
December Advisory Risk Low

Even during Hawaii's wet season, Hapuna Beach benefits from its dry microclimate and has minimal advisory history. Bacteria risk remains low year-round.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

December at Hapuna features large north swells and powerful shore break. The beach is beautiful but swimming can be hazardous during big surf. Water quality remains excellent due to the dry climate.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Winter north swells create powerful shore break at Hapuna. Waves can reach 6-10+ feet and the steep beach face produces pounding surf that causes more injuries than any other beach on the Big Island. Swimming is dangerous on big swell days.

👥 Crowd Levels

Extremely high. December through February is peak tourist season driven by holiday travel and mainland winter escapes. Book accommodations and tours well in advance.

📌 December Notes
Humpback whale watching season is active. Whales are frequently visible from shore, especially on Maui's western and southern coasts. Peak whale activity is January through March.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In december, this is especially important as wet-season storms can produce heavy rainfall and significant runoff.
