Hawaii the Island vs Hawaii the State

The biggest naming confusion in tourism, and the December 2025 vote to simplify it.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Rain washes bacteria from cesspools, animal waste, and urban contamination into streams and the ocean. Check Safe to Swim Hawaii before every beach visit.

The Naming Problem

Hawaiʻi is the name of both a US state (8 main islands, 1.4 million residents) and a specific island within that state (the largest island, often called "the Big Island"). This creates real confusion for tourists: "Iʻm flying to Hawaii" could mean any island, but "Iʻm flying to the Big Island" is specific.

The December 2025 Vote

In December 2025, the Hawaiʻi County Council voted to drop the "Island of" prefix, officially referring to the island as "Hawaiʻi" in county communications rather than "Island of Hawaiʻi." The move was supported by Hawaiian language advocates who noted that the "Island of" prefix is an English construction not present in Hawaiian. Despite this, "Big Island" remains the dominant informal name among both locals and tourists.
