Low Risk 2 / 5

North Kaʻanapali Beach at Honua Kai has generally good water quality. The beach is positioned north of the main Kaʻanapali resort corridor and benefits from less impervious surface runoff and a more open ocean exposure. The DOH monitors Kaʻanapali regularly and results for the northern section typically show low bacteria counts.

The ocean here has a healthy reef ecosystem that supports sea turtles, indicating good overall marine health. Winter months can bring stronger north swells that make swimming more challenging, though bacteria risk remains low year-round under normal conditions.

Based on: DOH Kaʻanapali monitoring, north beach position, open ocean flushing

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

After heavy Maui rain, stormwater from West Maui mountains can reach Kaʻanapali beaches. Wait at least 72 hours after heavy rain before swimming, and avoid entering water that looks brown or murky.
