Water quality status and bacteria risk rating for Airport Beach
📍 West Maui, north end of Kaʻanapali strip
Kaʻanapali North Beach (Airport Beach) has generally good water quality. The northern end of the Kaʻanapali coastline has less hotel density than the main resort strip to the south, which typically means less impact from resort runoff and landscaping chemicals. Open ocean exposure provides decent flushing.
The West Maui coast is one of the drier areas of Maui, which reduces the frequency of runoff events. The beach is known for good snorkeling, especially along the rocky points at the north end where sea turtles are frequently spotted. Conditions are typically calmer than north-facing shores.
Based on: DOH monitoring, open ocean exposure, lower resort density, West Maui dry climate
The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. While West Maui is relatively dry, runoff from the West Maui Mountains can reach the coast during storms. Always check the water visually before entering.
