Water quality status and bacteria risk rating
📍 Between Kaʻanapali and Napili, Maui West Side
Kahana Beach is a quieter stretch of West Maui coastline with generally good water quality. Located between the busy Kaʻanapali resort area and the charming Napili Bay, this condo-lined beach offers a more relaxed atmosphere. The dry West Side climate means less rainfall and less runoff impact.
The beach has decent ocean flushing along the West Maui coastline. Some older condo developments in the area may have aging wastewater infrastructure that could contribute to minor water quality concerns, particularly after heavy rain. Overall, Kahana Beach provides a pleasant, less touristy alternative to the Kaʻanapali resort beaches.
Based on: DOH beach monitoring, dry West Maui climate, coastline flushing, condo development proximity
The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. While the West Side of Maui is generally dry, heavy storms can occasionally affect the area. Runoff from the West Maui Mountains above can flow to the coast. Always check the water visually before entering.

Safe to Swim Hawaii is an independent passion project — it is not affiliated with the Hawaii Department of Health or any government agency. Water quality ratings on this site are estimates based on publicly available testing data and geographic analysis. They are not real-time measurements and may not reflect current conditions. “No DOH Alerts” means no advisory is currently posted — it does not mean the water was tested and found safe. DOH only monitors a fraction of Hawaii’s beaches, and some areas have no regular testing at all.
