Kailua: Oʻahu Beach Town vs Big Island Kona

"Kailua" means "two seas" — and there are two very different Kailuas in Hawaiʻi.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Rain washes bacteria from cesspools, animal waste, and urban contamination into streams and the ocean. Check Safe to Swim Hawaii before every beach visit.

"Kailua" comes from the Hawaiian words "kai" (sea) and "lua" (two), meaning "two seas" or "two currents." Both locations are at points where two ocean currents or two bodies of water meet.

Kailua, Oʻahu — The Beach Town

Kailua on Oʻahuʻs windward coast is a residential beach town about 30 minutes east of Waikiki through the Koʻolau Mountains. Kailua Beach has been repeatedly voted the best beach in America. The adjacent Lanikai is equally stunning. The town has local restaurants, shops, and a community feel that contrasts with Waikikiʻs tourist density.

Kailua-Kona, Big Island — The West Coast Hub

Kailua-Kona (usually just called "Kona") is the main tourist town on the Big Islandʻs dry western coast. Aliʻi Drive runs along the waterfront with restaurants, shops, and historic sites. The annual Ironman World Championship starts here. Kona is a departure point for snorkeling tours, manta ray dives, and coffee farm visits. The coastline is mostly rocky lava with small beach pockets.
