February Conditions at Kaʻanapali Beach
February Advisory Risk Moderate

Winter rain washes runoff from the West Maui Mountains toward the coast. Post-fire erosion concerns add to sediment risk during heavy storms. Advisory events are possible.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

February continues moderate rainfall at Kaʻanapali. Runoff from the West Maui Mountains can carry sediment and bacteria to the coastline. The beach is exposed to winter north swells that bring larger surf.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Winter north swells wrap around to the west coast, bringing larger surf to Kaʻanapali. Swimming can be affected during big swell events. Water temperature is around 75-77°F. Black Rock can have stronger currents.

👥 Crowd Levels

Extremely high. December through February is peak tourist season driven by holiday travel and mainland winter escapes. Book accommodations and tours well in advance.

📌 February Notes
Humpback whale watching season is active. Whales are frequently visible from shore, especially on Maui's western and southern coasts. Peak whale activity is January through March.
The 2023 Lahaina wildfire left areas of exposed soil in the West Maui Mountains above Kaʻanapali. Heavy rain can carry fire-related sediment and debris toward the coastline, potentially affecting nearshore water quality.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In february, this is especially important as wet-season storms can produce heavy rainfall and significant runoff.
