What to expect for water quality, rainfall, and ocean conditions
Occasional rain can bring runoff from the mountains. Kaʻanapali is drier than east Maui but wetter than Wailea. Monitor conditions after storms.
October marks the return of occasional rain to west Maui. Kaʻanapali starts seeing more cloud buildup over the West Maui Mountains. Runoff events begin increasing.
Winter north swells wrap around to the west coast, bringing larger surf to Kaʻanapali. Swimming can be affected during big swell events. Water temperature is around 75-77°F. Black Rock can have stronger currents.
Moderate to low. Fall shoulder season offers fewer tourists while conditions remain good. This is one of the best value periods for visiting Hawaii.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In october, this is especially important as wet-season storms can produce heavy rainfall and significant runoff.
