Water quality, conditions, and what to know before you go
Kailua is one of Hawaii's premier kayaking destinations. Paddle to the Mokulua Islands (about 1 mile offshore) for excellent snorkeling and wildlife viewing. The turquoise water and island backdrop are spectacular.
Trade wind currents push toward shore, making the return trip easier. Be aware of afternoon wind increases. Currents between the Mokulua Islands can be strong. Stay close to shore if winds exceed 15mph.
Trade winds are strongest in the afternoon. Launch early morning for the calmest paddling conditions. Afternoon headwinds can make the return from the islands challenging for beginners.
Multiple launch points along Kailua Beach. Kayak rentals are available from several shops in town with delivery to the beach. Kailua Beach Park has the easiest access with parking.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. This applies to all ocean activities including kayaking. Runoff carries bacteria from land into nearshore waters.
When conditions are clear, Kailua Beach has great options for kayaking. Check the water quality above, then book with confidence.
