Checking live advisories…
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours before swimming.

Historical Bacteria Risk

Low-Moderate Risk 2 / 5

Lanikai Beach has generally good water quality thanks to strong trade wind flushing and its offshore barrier reef that provides calm, well-circulated water. The beach is known for its stunning turquoise water and pristine appearance.

The main risk comes from groundwater seepage from cesspools and older septic systems in the residential neighborhood directly behind the beach. Kailua/Lanikai is a known cesspool area — Hawaii has been slowly mandating cesspool upgrades but many remain. After rain events, this contamination risk increases.

Based on: Trade wind exposure, offshore reef, residential cesspool density, limited DOH monitoring data

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. At Lanikai, rain increases groundwater seepage from cesspools in the neighborhood above the beach. Even if the water looks clear, bacteria levels can be elevated after storms.

What Affects Water Quality at Lanikai
💧 Groundwater & Cesspool Seepage

The Kailua-Lanikai area has hundreds of older cesspools that discharge directly into the groundwater. This can carry bacteria to nearshore waters, especially after rain saturates the ground.

🌊 Offshore Reef Protection

Lanikai's barrier reef creates a calm, shallow lagoon. This protects swimmers from waves but can reduce water exchange, sometimes trapping pollution longer than open-ocean beaches.

🌬️ Trade Wind Flushing

On windy days, the strong Hawaiian trade winds drive water circulation and help flush the lagoon. Calm days with light wind can allow bacteria to concentrate.
