Water quality status and bacteria risk rating
📍 Near Lahaina, Maui — popular family beach with wading pool
Launiupoko Beach Park is a beloved family beach on Maui's West Side with generally good water quality. The open ocean areas benefit from decent flushing along the coastline. The beach features a man-made rock-enclosed wading pool that creates a calm, shallow area perfect for small children.
The wading pool area may have slightly reduced water circulation compared to the open ocean, so exercise extra caution there after rain. Runoff from the hillside developments and agricultural land above the highway can affect water quality during storms. The West Side of Maui tends to be drier, which generally benefits water quality.
Based on: DOH beach monitoring, West Maui coastline flushing, hillside runoff potential, enclosed wading pool area
The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. While the West Side of Maui is generally drier, heavy storms can bring runoff from the hillside developments and agricultural areas above the highway. The enclosed wading pool may be slower to flush than the open ocean.

Safe to Swim Hawaii is an independent passion project — it is not affiliated with the Hawaii Department of Health or any government agency. Water quality ratings on this site are estimates based on publicly available testing data and geographic analysis. They are not real-time measurements and may not reflect current conditions. “No DOH Alerts” means no advisory is currently posted — it does not mean the water was tested and found safe. DOH only monitors a fraction of Hawaii’s beaches, and some areas have no regular testing at all.
