April at Makena is dry and pleasant. The lack of streams or runoff sources means water quality is consistently excellent. South swells begin arriving occasionally, creating shore break conditions.
Winter brings some north swell energy wrapping to the south coast, but shore break is less intense than summer. The steep beach face still produces pounding waves. Water temperature is 75-77°F. Never turn your back on the ocean here.
Moderate. The shoulder season between spring break and summer offers a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In april, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
