Water quality at Makaiwa Bay
Mauna Lani sits on the dry Kohala Coast of the Big Island, one of the most consistently clean beach areas in Hawaii. Makaiwa Bay is a small protected cove with anchialine ponds (natural brackish pools) nearby. The Kohala Coast receives very little rainfall compared to the windward side, which means minimal runoff into the ocean. There are no major streams near the resort. The lava rock coastline provides natural filtration. Water quality here is consistently excellent.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain, even if the water looks clear. Bacteria and pollutants from runoff can linger in the water longer than the brown color does.
If the ocean near Mauna Lani, Auberge Resort turns brown or murky after rain, do not enter the water. Brown water carries bacteria, pollutants, and sediment from runoff. Wait at least 72 hours after the rain stops and until the water visually clears before swimming. Consider these alternatives in the meantime:
