Water quality status and bacteria risk rating
📍 Remote North Shore, between Anahola & Kilauea, Kauaʻi
Moloaʻa Beach earns a moderate bacteria risk rating primarily due to Moloaʻa Stream and the high rainfall on Kauai’s North Shore. The surrounding valley can receive 60+ inches of rain per year, making runoff a significant factor after any rainfall event.
The beach itself is otherwise pristine — no development, no wastewater infrastructure, and no crowds. During extended dry periods, water quality at the main beach area (away from the stream mouth) is generally very good. The remote location means DOH does not regularly monitor this beach, so visual inspection is especially important here.
Based on: Stream mouth present, high North Shore rainfall, no DOH regular monitoring, no development offset
North Shore Kauai is one of the wettest places on Earth. Wait at least 72 hours after any rainfall before swimming at Moloaʻa. Even light rain can turn the stream brown and push bacteria into the bay. The water often visibly discolors near the stream mouth after rain — if you see brown water, stay out.
