Napili Bay

Water quality status and swimming conditions

📍 Northwest Maui, between Kaʻanapali and Kapalua

Checking live advisories…
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
After heavy rain on Maui, runoff from the residential area around Napili Bay can temporarily degrade water quality. Always check visual conditions before entering — if the water looks murky or brown, wait at least 72 hours after rain has stopped.

Low-Moderate Risk 2 / 5

Napili Bay is a protected, crescent-shaped bay on northwest Maui with generally good water quality under normal dry conditions. The bay benefits from its relatively open exposure to the northwest and good tidal flushing. The surrounding area is primarily residential and small hotels rather than heavy commercial development, which helps.

The main water quality risk factor here is stormwater runoff after heavy rain. The bay's somewhat enclosed shape means it doesn't flush contaminants as quickly as an open-coast beach. The DOH does not monitor this beach as regularly as some others, so visual assessment is always important.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Napili Bay's residential surroundings contribute stormwater runoff after rain. The bay can take longer to clear than open beaches due to its enclosed shape. If the water looks green-brown rather than blue, wait longer.

About Napili Bay

Napili Bay sits at the base of a residential community on northwest Maui, sandwiched between the Kaʻanapali resort district to the south and the Kapalua resort to the north. It's a classic crescent bay with a modest sandy beach fronted by small condominiums and low-rise hotels — the Napili Kai Beach Resort and Napili Surf are the landmarks.

The beach access is public (as all Hawaii beaches are) but somewhat hidden — look for access paths off Napili Place or Hui Dr. Parking is limited; early arrival helps. The bay has a pleasant local community feel and is considerably quieter than Kaʻanapali.

Snorkeling: The best snorkeling is along the rock outcroppings at both ends of the bay. Turtles are frequently seen near the south end reef. Morning hours offer the best visibility. The center of the bay is sandy-bottom and better for swimming than snorkeling.

Waves: Generally calm, protected from the dominant trade wind swell. Can see short-period north swell in winter. Summer is usually the calmest. Not known for dangerous wave conditions under normal circumstances.

Napili vs. Nearby Beaches

Napili Bay is part of a cluster of excellent northwest Maui beaches:

Kapalua Bay (just north)
More protected, slightly better water quality ratings. Larger resort complex. See Kapalua Bay water quality →
Honolua Bay (further north)
Excellent snorkeling in summer, rough surf in winter. Marine conservation district. See Honolua Bay guide →
Kaʻanapali Beach (south)
Longer beach, more developed, busier. Good snorkeling at Black Rock. See Kaʻanapali Beach guide →
