April Conditions at Sandy Beach
April Advisory Risk Very Low

Sandy Beach has excellent water quality year-round with no significant contamination sources. Advisory events are rare. The danger at Sandy Beach is always the powerful shore break, never bacteria.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

April brings about 1 inch of rain to Sandy Beach. Conditions begin favoring south swells which create the powerful shore break this beach is famous for. Water quality is good with minimal runoff.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Winter swells from the east and northeast create powerful shore break. Sandy Beach is dangerous year-round but winter swells can produce unpredictable wave patterns. The beach is NOT for casual swimming in any season.

👥 Crowd Levels

Moderate. The shoulder season between spring break and summer offers a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

📌 April Notes
Humpback whale watching season is active. Whales are frequently visible from shore, especially on Maui's western and southern coasts. Peak whale activity is January through March.
Sandy Beach is one of Hawaii's most dangerous beaches for wave injuries. The powerful shore break has caused numerous spinal cord injuries and drownings. This is NOT a swimming beach. Even experienced body surfers are injured here regularly. Watch from the beach if you are unfamiliar with the conditions.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In april, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
