August Conditions at Sandy Beach
August Advisory Risk Very Low

Sandy Beach has excellent water quality year-round with no significant contamination sources. Advisory events are rare. The danger at Sandy Beach is always the powerful shore break, never bacteria.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

August continues powerful shore break conditions. Sandy Beach is NOT a swimming beach. Body surfing and body boarding are the primary activities, and they carry serious risk. Water quality remains excellent.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Summer south swells create the most powerful shore break at Sandy Beach. Waves break directly onto the steep, hard-packed sand with tremendous force. This is NOT a swimming beach. Body surfing and body boarding carry serious injury risk, including spinal cord damage.

👥 Crowd Levels

High. Sandy Beach draws experienced body surfers and spectators. Summer brings peak crowds of locals who know the waves. Parking fills quickly on weekends.

📌 August Notes
Sandy Beach is one of Hawaii's most dangerous beaches for wave injuries. The powerful shore break has caused numerous spinal cord injuries and drownings. This is NOT a swimming beach. Even experienced body surfers are injured here regularly. Watch from the beach if you are unfamiliar with the conditions.
Summer is the safest time for ocean swimming on most Oahu beaches, with smaller surf and fewer water quality advisories.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In august, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
