Water quality, conditions, and what to know before you go
Good to excellent visibility on calm days. Kailua's turquoise water provides 20-40 feet visibility when conditions are right. Trade wind chop can reduce surface visibility. Best after extended dry periods.
Limited coral reef directly at the beach. Better snorkeling along the rocky edges and toward Flat Island (Popoia). Sea turtles are commonly seen grazing on algae in the shallows.
Kawainui Marsh and Enchanted Lake drain toward Kailua Beach. After rain, bacteria levels can spike from runoff through these waterways. Cuts and scrapes from coral or rocks increase infection risk when bacteria is elevated.
Early morning before trade winds pick up. Summer months offer the best combination of calm conditions and clean water. Avoid the first 72 hours after significant rainfall.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. This applies to all ocean activities including snorkeling. Runoff carries bacteria from land into nearshore waters.
