Sunset Beach — In Depth

Sunset Beach is one of Oʻahu’s great transforming beaches. In winter it hosts massive, powerful surf that draws the world’s best big wave surfers. The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing uses Sunset as a key venue, and when large northwest swells arrive — 25 to 40 foot faces are not uncommon — the spectacle from shore is extraordinary.

From May through September, Sunset flattens almost completely. The same beach becomes a wide, calm, golden sand stretch ideal for families, picnics, and easy swimming. Water quality is excellent — the beach sits in open ocean with clean, well-flushed water and very little urban runoff influence. This is one of the best summer swimming beaches on the North Shore.

Best time to visit for swimming

May through September. Bacteria risk stays very low year-round. Lifeguards on duty. Wide beach with room for everyone.

Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline) — In Depth
Winter Warning: Extreme Danger

Banzai Pipeline is considered the world’s most dangerous surf break in active winter conditions. The wave breaks in as little as 2 feet of water over sharp lava reef. Deaths and serious injuries occur regularly. Do not enter the water at Pipeline from October through April.

Ehukai Beach Park is the small beach directly in front of Banzai Pipeline. The wave is a thick, hollow, left-breaking barrel that slams onto an extremely shallow reef — when large, it is widely regarded as the most powerful and technically demanding wave in the world. Watching from shore during a swell event is one of the most spectacular experiences in all of surfing.

In summer, the wave settles considerably. Local surfers and intermediate visitors can enjoy calmer conditions, but rogue sets can still arrive from northwest swells even in summer. Always watch from shore before entering.

Water quality at Ehukai is generally good. Open ocean circulation provides strong flushing. The bacteria risk is low (2/5) under normal conditions. The primary danger here is always physical, not bacterial.

Which Should You Visit?
For watching winter surf competitions → Pipeline (Ehukai)

The Vans Triple Crown and other events make Pipeline the place to be from November through February. Arrive early for shore access. Never enter the water.

For summer swimming with the family → Sunset Beach

Wide, calm, excellent water quality, lifeguards. One of Oʻahu’s best summer beaches with very little tourist congestion.

For walking both → Visit in summer

Both beaches are within easy walking or driving distance. In summer you can visit both in one trip — swim at Sunset, walk to Pipeline, and continue the North Shore drive.

⚠️ North Shore Seasonal Warning

The North Shore completely changes character between seasons. Waves that appear manageable from shore can be dangerously large when you are in the water. Even experienced swimmers have been caught off guard by large sets at beaches that looked calm. Always watch the ocean for a minimum of 15 minutes and heed lifeguard instructions before entering.
