Surfing Conditions at Hanauma Bay
Surf & Water Quality Conditions 🏄
🌊 Wave Conditions

Hanauma Bay is a protected Marine Life Conservation District. Surfing is not permitted inside the bay. The outer reef occasionally breaks but is not accessible for surfing. This is a snorkeling-only destination.

⚠️ Shore Break

Minimal waves inside the bay due to the protected reef. Occasional south swells can create small waves at the bay entrance. Surfboards and boogie boards are not allowed.

🦠 Bacteria Risk in Surf Zone

While surfing is not permitted, the enclosed bay shape means bacteria concentrates after rain. The hillside runoff collects in the bay. Not relevant for surfing but important context.

If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. This applies to all ocean activities including surfing. Runoff carries bacteria from land into nearshore waters.
