Surfing Conditions at Waikiki Beach
Surf & Water Quality Conditions 🏄
🌊 Wave Conditions

Waikiki offers gentle, consistent waves ideal for learning to surf. The reef break produces long, manageable rides. Summer south swells (May-September) provide the best surf. Winter conditions are typically small on the south shore.

⚠️ Shore Break

Minimal shore break. The sloping sand and reef structure create a gradual entry. This is one of the safest beaches in Hawaii for beginning surfers. Watch for shallow reef at low tide.

🦠 Bacteria Risk in Surf Zone

Surfers are exposed to bacteria through facial submersion, ingestion of water, and any cuts from reef. The Ala Wai Canal discharge is the primary concern at Waikiki. Avoid surfing for 72 hours after heavy rain.

If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. This applies to all ocean activities including surfing. Runoff carries bacteria from land into nearshore waters.
