Water quality status and swim conditions
📍 North Shore Oʻahu · Near Sunset Beach · Local favorite
Waialeʻe Beach is one of the quieter stretches of North Shore coastline, located near Kahuku between the busy tourist beaches to the west and the remote northern tip of Oʻahu. The beach has good water quality overall — the North Shore has minimal urban development compared to Honolulu, and open ocean flushing keeps bacteria levels low in normal conditions.
The main risk factor is Waialeʻe Stream, which drains agricultural land from the interior plateau. After heavy rain, the stream can discharge sediment and bacteria into the nearshore. The stream mouth area should be avoided for 72 hours after significant rainfall. The DOH does not regularly test this specific beach.
This is a local, uncrowded alternative to the busy tourist beaches nearby. Come for the tranquility, not the facilities (there are none).
Based on: North Shore Oahu regional DOH data, stream proximity, minimal development
The Hawaii DOH recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Avoid the area near Waialeʻe Stream mouth after storms.
