Hanapepe, Kauaʻi — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

About Hanapēpē

Hanapēpē is a historic town on Kauaʻi's west side, known for its art galleries along the main street, the swinging footbridge over the Hanapēpē River, and a Friday night art walk that draws visitors from across the island. The town calls itself "Kauaʻi's Biggest Little Town" and has a distinct old-Hawaii feel.

The west side of Kauaʻi is the driest and sunniest part of the island, so beach days are reliable year-round. Beaches here range from protected family-friendly coves to miles-long stretches of open sand facing west toward some of the best sunsets in Hawaii.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Salt Pond Beach Low ●
A reef-protected cove with calm, clear water and the only Hawaiian salt pans still in use in the islands. Lifeguards, restrooms, and picnic facilities make it one of the best all-around beach parks on Kauaʻi's west side.
5 min
West
Poipu Beach Low ●
Kauaʻi's most popular family beach with a natural wading pool on one side and open water on the other. Hawaiian monk seals frequently rest on the sand. Full resort-area amenities within walking distance.
20 min
Southeast
Kekaha Beach Low ●
Miles of uninterrupted sand stretching toward Polihale, facing due west for unobstructed sunset views. Open ocean with no reef protection, so surf can be strong. Best enjoyed for walks and sunsets rather than swimming on big days.
15 min
West
Glass Beach Moderate ●
A curiosity rather than a swimming beach — the shoreline near Port Allen is covered in colorful sea glass pebbles smoothed by decades of wave action. Worth a quick stop for photos, but not a place to get in the water.
