Water quality & safety — Kauaʻi's longest beach
📍 Kekaha, West Kauaʻi — near Polihale & Waimea
Kekaha Beach generally has good water quality under dry conditions. The remote West Side location has minimal urban runoff sources. Open Pacific exposure provides good flushing. Bacteria risk is low compared to resort-adjacent beaches.
The primary bacteria risk comes from the Waimea River, which drains a large watershed through Waimea Canyon. After significant rainfall, the river can discharge bacteria-laden water along this coastline. Avoid the beach near Waimea town (about 4 miles east) for 72+ hours after heavy rain.
Based on: Remote West Side location, minimal development, Waimea River discharge risk
The Department of Health recommends 72 hours after heavy rain before ocean entry. The Waimea River watershed includes Waimea Canyon — heavy mountain rain can reach the coast hours later.
