Koloa Landing, Poipu, Kauaʻi — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk
Koloa Landing sits in the heart of Poʻipū on Kauaʻi's sunny south shore, an area that sees less rainfall than almost anywhere else on the island. The resort is built around a historic harbor site where the first sugar plantation in Hawaii once shipped its cargo, and the surrounding coastline mixes rocky volcanic shelves with protected sandy coves.
The Poʻipū coast is one of the most family-oriented stretches in the state, with several beaches clustered within a short drive or walk. Monk seals frequently haul out on the sand, and humpback whales are visible offshore from December through April. Water quality on the south shore tends to recover quickly after rain compared to Kauaʻi's wetter north side.
All beaches listed here are on Kauaʻi's south shore and accessible from Koloa Landing via Poʻipū Road. Poʻipū Beach Park and Brennecke Beach are both within a five-minute drive east along the coast road, and Baby Beach is close enough to walk from the resort. Shipwreck Beach requires heading east past the Grand Hyatt. For Salt Pond Beach, drive west on Kaumualiʻi Highway (Hwy 50) past Hanapēpē.
Best for families: Poʻipū Beach Park (lifeguards, calm wading area, monk seals). Best for toddlers: Baby Beach (shallow reef pool). Best for bodysurfing: Brennecke Beach (steep shore break). Best for scenery: Shipwreck Beach (cliffs and hiking trail).
