Beaches Near Koloa Landing Resort

Koloa Landing, Poipu, Kauaʻi — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Koloa Landing, Poipu, Kauaʻi. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Kauaʻi advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About the Koloa Landing Area

Koloa Landing sits in the heart of Poʻipū on Kauaʻi's sunny south shore, an area that sees less rainfall than almost anywhere else on the island. The resort is built around a historic harbor site where the first sugar plantation in Hawaii once shipped its cargo, and the surrounding coastline mixes rocky volcanic shelves with protected sandy coves.

The Poʻipū coast is one of the most family-oriented stretches in the state, with several beaches clustered within a short drive or walk. Monk seals frequently haul out on the sand, and humpback whales are visible offshore from December through April. Water quality on the south shore tends to recover quickly after rain compared to Kauaʻi's wetter north side.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Kauaʻi's top-rated family beach with a natural tombolo that creates a shallow wading area on one side and open water for stronger swimmers on the other. Lifeguards are on duty daily, restrooms and showers are available, and Hawaiian monk seals regularly rest on the sand between the two swimming zones
5 min
East
Brennecke Beach Low ●
A compact, steep-shored beach tucked just east of Poʻipū Beach Park, known across the island for its reliable bodysurfing waves. The shore break here is powerful even on calm days, so it draws experienced bodysurfers and bodyboarders rather than casual swimmers. There are no lifeguards, and the rocky sides of the cove demand attention
5 min
East
Baby Beach Poipu Low ●
A tiny, reef-sheltered inlet where the water rarely reaches knee height, making it a go-to for families with very young children. The rocky shelf surrounding the pool keeps larger waves out, though water circulation is limited, so entry after heavy rain is not recommended
3 min walk
East
Shipwreck Beach High ●
A striking crescent of golden sand backed by tall lithified sea cliffs that draw cliff jumpers and hikers along the Mahaʻulepu Heritage Trail. The surf here is strong and the currents unpredictable, so most visitors come for the scenery and trail rather than the water. There are no lifeguards or facilities on the beach itself
10 min
East
Salt Pond Beach Low ●
A reef-protected beach on the west side of the island near Hanapēpē, where traditional Hawaiian salt-making pans are still in active use. The water inside the reef stays calm on most days, and lifeguards, restrooms, picnic pavilions, and a large grassy park make it a local family gathering spot on weekends
