Beaches Near Koloa Town

Koloa, Kauaʻi — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Koloa, Kauaʻi. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Kauaʻi advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About Koloa Town

Koloa is a historic plantation town on Kauaʻi's south shore, sitting just a mile inland from the Poipu resort area. The small main street is lined with shops, restaurants, and a heritage trail that tells the story of Hawaii's first sugar plantation, established here in 1835. Because Koloa sits slightly uphill from the coast, all beaches require a short 5-to-10-minute drive south toward Poipu. The south shore of Kauaʻi is the driest part of the island, receiving significantly less rainfall than the north shore, which means clearer ocean water and fewer weather disruptions to beach plans. Koloa makes an excellent base for exploring Kauaʻi's best swimming beaches.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Poipu Beach Park is consistently ranked among the best family beaches in America, with lifeguards, restrooms, and a unique tombolo that creates a sheltered wading pool. Monk seals and sea turtles appear frequently on the sand. Water quality typically tests low for bacteria because no streams discharge directly onto this section of coastline.

Brennecke Beach Low ●
Brennecke Beach sits just east of Poipu Beach Park and attracts bodysurfers with its steep, fast shore break. The small beach can get crowded on good swell days, and the powerful waves demand respect even from experienced ocean swimmers. Because it faces open ocean without stream influence, water quality here is reliably clean.

South
Shipwreck Beach High ●
Shipwreck Beach (Keoneloa Bay) is the dramatic, cliff-backed beach below the Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi. Strong currents, pounding shore break, and the exposed coastline make swimming inadvisable for most visitors. The real draw here is the Mahaʻulepu Heritage Trail, which begins at the beach and follows the coast past ancient lithified sand dunes.

Southeast
Baby Beach Poipu Low ●
Baby Beach Poipu is a protected cove in a residential area where a shallow reef shelf keeps the water ankle-to-knee-deep at all times. Families with infants and toddlers come here specifically for the ultra-calm conditions. There are no lifeguards or restrooms, and parking is limited to a few roadside spots along Hoʻowili Road.
10 min
South
Salt Pond Beach Low ●
Salt Pond Beach Park is a reef-protected swimming area near Hanapēpē where local families gather for weekend barbecues and swimming. Traditional Hawaiian sea salt harvesting ponds sit adjacent to the beach, still in active use. Lifeguards, picnic facilities, and consistently calm water make this one of Kauaʻi's best all-around beach parks.

If Brown Water Is Active
