Beaches Near Outrigger Reef

Outrigger Reef Waikiki, Oʻahu — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Outrigger Reef Waikiki, Oʻahu. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Oʻahu advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Area

The Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort sits on the western end of Waikiki along the stretch of sand fronting Fort DeRussy Beach Park, a section of shoreline that feels noticeably less congested than the main Waikiki strip near the Royal Hawaiian. The hotel is steps from the beach and within walking distance of essentially every major Waikiki beach.

This part of Waikiki benefits from the Fort DeRussy military park, which preserves a wide swath of open green space and keeps the beachfront less built-up than the central hotel corridor. The Ala Wai Canal empties into the ocean about half a mile east, which can influence water quality along the central Waikiki shoreline, particularly after heavy rain. Beaches to the east toward Diamond Head tend to have cleaner water than those near the canal outlet.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Fort DeRussy Beach Moderate ●
The beach directly fronting the Outrigger Reef and the adjacent Fort DeRussy Beach Park, offering a wide stretch of sand that is generally less crowded than the main Waikiki strip to the east. The water is shallow and calm in most conditions, making it popular with families. Water quality can be influenced by the Ala Wai Canal outflow, especially after rain

Ala Moana Beach Moderate ●

The park has full facilities including lifeguards, tennis courts, and a large grassy area, and it connects to the Ala Moana Shopping Center across the street

Kaimana Beach Low ●
Also known as Sans Souci Beach, this small crescent at the eastern end of Waikiki consistently records the lowest bacteria levels in the entire Waikiki stretch. The beach sits below the New Otani hotel near the Kapiolani Park end, away from the Ala Wai Canal influence.
