Wailuku, Maui — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk
Wailuku is the county seat of Maui and sits at the base of the West Maui Mountains in the central valley between Haleakala and the West Maui range. The town has a charming old Main Street with local shops, galleries, and restaurants — a quieter alternative to the resort areas on the coast.
Being centrally located, Wailuku gives you reasonable access to beaches in multiple directions: north shore (Kanaha, Baldwin), west side (Kaʻanapali), and south side (Wailea). Drive times range from 10 to 35 minutes depending on direction and traffic. The Iao Valley State Monument is also minutes away if you want to combine a valley hike with a beach afternoon.
From Wailuku, take Hwy 32 to Hwy 36 east for the north-shore beaches (Kanaha, Baldwin). For Kaʻanapali, head west on Hwy 30 through the scenic pali (cliff road) past Lahaina. For south Maui (Wailea, Kamaole), take the Piʻilani Highway south through Kihei.
Best quick trip: Kanaha Beach (10 min). Best for snorkeling: Kaʻanapali Beach at Black Rock. Best water quality: Wailea Beach. Best for families: Kamaole III (playground, gentle waves).
