Waimanalo, Oʻahu — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

About Waimanalo

Waimanalo is a rural community on Oʻahu's windward coast, tucked between the Koʻolau mountains and some of the island's most stunning shoreline. The town retains a distinctly local feel with small farms, roadside fruit stands, and a slower pace than anything on the Honolulu side. Waimanalo's beaches stretch for miles along the coast with consistently clean water and fine white sand. The area receives regular trade-wind showers that keep the mountains green, but the beaches themselves drain well and recover quickly. Visitors looking for uncrowded sand and a glimpse of everyday Hawaiian life will find Waimanalo one of the most rewarding stops on Oʻahu.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Waimanalo Beach Low ●
At over three miles long, Waimanalo Beach is the longest continuous stretch of sand on Oʻahu. The wide, flat shoreline is backed by ironwood trees and rarely feels crowded, even on weekends. Water quality here consistently ranks among the best on the windward side, with minimal stream runoff affecting the main swimming areas.

Bellows Beach Low ●
Bellows is a military beach that opens to the public on weekends and federal holidays. The sheltered bay has gentle shore break ideal for beginner bodyboarders and families with young children. Camping is available by permit, and the ironwood-lined sand feels secluded despite being just minutes from town.

Makapuu Beach Low ●
Makapuʻu is Oʻahu's premier bodysurfing beach, with a steep shore break that produces powerful waves even on calm days. The Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail starts from the parking lot and offers panoramic views of the windward coast and offshore islands. No stream runoff reaches this beach, so water quality tends to hold up well even after rain.
10 min
South
Kailua Beach Moderate ●
Kailua Beach consistently appears on national "best beach" lists for its turquoise water and powdery sand. Kayak rentals nearby let you paddle out to the Mokulua Islands, a pair of seabird sanctuaries just offshore. The Enchanted Lake canal drains into the bay, which contributes to moderate bacteria readings after heavy rain.
15 min
North
Lanikai Beach Low ●
Lanikai regularly tests as one of Oʻahu's cleanest swimming spots thanks to its distance from any stream outlet. Access is through narrow public paths between beachfront homes in a quiet residential neighborhood, and there are no restrooms or parking lots. The twin Mokulua Islands frame the horizon, making this one of the most photographed beaches in Hawaii.
