Ranked by water quality, safety & conditions
One of the most protected swimming areas on Kauai. Boulders form an enclosed ocean pool that blocks waves and currents while allowing fresh ocean water to circulate. Excellent for children and non-swimmers. Park facilities are well-maintained.
South Kauai’s drier climate and calm conditions give Poipu historically lower bacteria levels and calmer water year-round among popular Kauai beaches. Lifeguards on duty. Monk seals and sea turtles frequent the beach.
One of the north shore’s most protected swimming beaches. A long fringing reef blocks waves, creating a calm lagoon. Excellent for snorkeling, kayaking, and families. Beautiful, tree-lined beach park.
One of Kauai’s most underrated beaches. Natural rock formations protect the swimming area. The dry west shore climate means minimal runoff risk. A local favorite with excellent facilities.
Lihue’s main beach fronts Nawiliwili Harbor. The protected bay creates calm conditions. Higher urban runoff risk than south shore options, but generally fine during dry weather.
These Kauai beaches are beautiful but carry higher risk or seasonal danger:
