Water quality at Kamakahonu Bay
The Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel sits on Kamakahonu Bay, a small protected cove right in the heart of Kailua-Kona town. This tiny beach was the former royal residence of King Kamehameha I. The bay is very calm and sheltered, making it great for beginners. Water quality is moderate because the bay is small and enclosed, which slows water exchange. Urban runoff from the town can affect water quality after rain. The nearby seawall and harbor contribute to reduced circulation.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain, even if the water looks clear. Bacteria and pollutants from runoff can linger in the water longer than the brown color does.
