Electric Beach Water Quality in August

What to expect for water quality, rainfall, and ocean conditions

August Conditions at Electric Beach
August Advisory Risk Very Low

The dry leeward coast and lack of stream discharge make Electric Beach one of Oahu's cleanest beaches for water quality. Advisory events are extremely rare here.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

August continues the driest conditions. The warm water outfall from the power plant maintains consistent temperatures year-round. Marine life is abundant. Water quality is excellent with no rainfall to cause runoff.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

The warm water outfall from the Kahe Power Plant raises water temperature 3-5°F above surrounding ocean. This attracts dolphins, sea turtles, and tropical fish year-round. Summer brings the calmest conditions for snorkeling. The warm plume is clearly visible as a slight shimmer. Visibility is excellent. Spinner dolphins often visit in early morning hours.

👥 Crowd Levels

Moderate. Electric Beach attracts snorkelers and divers rather than sunbathers. The parking lot is small and fills early on weekends. Not a mainstream tourist beach.

📌 August Notes
The warm water outfall from the Kahe Power Plant attracts spinner dolphins, sea turtles, and large schools of tropical fish. Best snorkeling is near the outfall pipe on calm days. Enter from the sandy area, not the rocky points. Strong current can develop near the pipe.
Summer is the safest time for ocean swimming on most Oahu beaches, with smaller surf and fewer water quality advisories.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In august, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
