Spinner Dolphin Resting Bay — Observe Respectfully
Hoʻokena is a known spinner dolphin resting bay. NOAA rules prohibit approaching resting dolphins. Do not swim toward them or enter water when a pod is resting nearby. Violations carry fines up to $100,000.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
After heavy Kona rain, runoff can temporarily affect water quality. Wait 72 hours after significant rainfall before entering the water.

Historical Bacteria Risk

Low Risk 2 / 5

Hoʻokena Beach generally has good water quality. The South Kona location is removed from major urban centers and the relatively small local community reduces runoff impact. The cove shape provides moderate protection from ocean swells while still allowing water exchange.

The primary bacteria risk comes from the stream that drains into the bay and nearby cesspools in the hillside community above. After heavy Kona-side rain, both sources can temporarily elevate bacteria levels in the enclosed cove. The 72-hour rule is especially important here due to the cove's limited water exchange.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Department of Health recommends 72 hours after heavy rain before ocean entry. Hoʻokena's cove can trap bacteria longer than open beaches due to reduced water exchange. Extra caution after rain is warranted.
