Water quality & swimming safety guide
📍 Kahala, East Honolulu — Quiet residential beach east of Diamond Head
Kahala Beach has moderate water quality — better than central Waikiki on average, but still affected by drainage from the residential Kahala neighborhood after rain. During extended dry periods, the water here is notably clear and clean. The eastern sections near Wailupe Stream are more prone to elevated bacteria counts.
The Kahala area has fewer storm drains than urban Waikiki, but the residential neighborhood contributes runoff from lawns, streets, and drainage canals during heavy rain. The farther west you are along the beach (away from Wailupe Stream), the better the typical water quality.
Wailupe Stream empties into the ocean at the eastern end of the Kahala coastline. After heavy rain, bacteria levels near this outfall can be significantly elevated. The DOH issues advisories for this area after storms. Wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming near Waialae Beach Park.
Kahala Beach is one of Oʻahu's least-visited but most beautiful stretches of coastline — a quiet, reef-protected beach fronting the exclusive Kahala residential neighborhood just east of Diamond Head. The beach is largely unknown to tourists, making it a peaceful retreat compared to busy Waikiki.
Public beach access is available via small right-of-ways off Kahala Avenue — look for signed beach access paths between private homes. The Kahala Hotel & Resort (formerly the Kahala Hilton) sits at the western end and has its own beach. For the cleanest water on Oʻahu, Kailua Beach is a 30-minute drive.
