What to expect for water quality, rainfall, and ocean conditions
Dry season brings reduced rainfall to the windward coast. Kailua Beach water quality is generally excellent during summer months.
September is still relatively dry but the first signs of the wet season transition appear. Occasional tropical disturbances can bring heavier rain. Water quality remains good during dry periods.
Windward shores are calm in summer with gentle trade wind swells. Water is warm (79-80°F) and clear. Excellent conditions for kayaking to the Mokulua Islands. Light onshore breeze in the afternoon.
Moderate to low. Fall shoulder season offers fewer tourists while conditions remain good. This is one of the best value periods for visiting Hawaii.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In september, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
