Waimea Bay receives the largest rideable surf on Earth during winter. Waves can exceed 30 feet. Never enter the water at Waimea Bay during winter swells. Multiple drownings occur here every year.

Kailua Beach
Windward O'ahu, east side. 35 min from Waikiki. Near Lanikai Beach and Kailua town.
Waimea Bay
North Shore. 55 min from Waikiki. Near Haleiwa town and Sharks Cove.
Visit Both in One Day

Many visitors do a circle island tour that visits both beaches in one day — start at Kailua Beach in the morning (best light, least crowded), then head north via the Koʻolau pali to the North Shore, stopping at Waimea Bay and Haleiwa. Return to Waikiki via H-2. In summer, you can swim at both. In winter, swim only at Kailua.
