Morning provides the calmest conditions. Afternoon trade winds can create significant chop across the open bay. Stay closer to shore when winds are strong.
Launch from Hanalei Beach Park or the pier area. Hanalei River provides calm-water kayaking upstream. Kayak rentals are available in Hanalei town.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. This applies to all ocean activities including kayaking. Runoff carries bacteria from land into nearshore waters.
