Water quality status and bacteria risk rating
📍 Honolulu, near the airport — Oʻahu
Keehi Lagoon Beach Park occupies a semi-enclosed lagoon on Oʻahu's south shore between Honolulu Harbor and the airport. The limited water circulation means pollutants accumulate rather than flush out. Storm drain outfalls, boat activity, and urban runoff from heavily developed surrounding areas all contribute to elevated bacteria risk.
The park is much better suited for wind sports, kayaking, and picnicking than swimming or snorkeling. Trade winds that funnel through the lagoon make it one of Honolulu's best spots for kiteboarding and windsurfing.
Based on: enclosed water body, urban runoff proximity, harbor adjacency, limited ocean flushing
The Department of Health recommends staying out of the water for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Keehi Lagoon is especially vulnerable to rain-related contamination due to its urban location and numerous storm drains feeding into it.
