April Conditions at Ko Olina Lagoons
April Advisory Risk Low

The dry leeward coast and calm lagoons provide consistently good water quality during the dry season. Advisory events are rare.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

April is dry at Ko Olina with under 0.5 inches of rain. The lagoons provide calm, protected swimming. Water quality is consistently good on the leeward coast during the dry transition.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

The man-made lagoons at Ko Olina provide consistently calm, protected swimming regardless of open-ocean conditions. The lagoons are sheltered from trade winds and surf. Water is warm year-round (75-80°F).

👥 Crowd Levels

Moderate. The shoulder season between spring break and summer offers a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

📌 April Notes
Humpback whale watching season is active. Whales are frequently visible from shore, especially on Maui's western and southern coasts. Peak whale activity is January through March.
Ko Olina's four man-made lagoons were engineered with rock breakwaters. Water circulation in the lagoons is slower than open beaches, which means any contamination from rain runoff can linger longer.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In april, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
