Waipouli water quality & swimming guide
📍 Waipouli, Kapaʻa, Kauaʻi — Coconut Coast
The Waipouli coastline is on Kauaʻi’s east side, which receives significant rainfall from the island’s interior mountains. The nearby Wailua River carries runoff that can affect water quality, especially after rain. The ocean here is primarily rough and not recommended for casual ocean swimming.
Marriott’s Kauaʻi Beach Club compensates with an exceptional multi-pool lagoon system that provides calm, clean swimming on-property. For ocean swimming, the Poipu area on Kauaʻi’s south shore offers consistently better conditions and lower bacteria risk.
Kauaʻi’s east side is one of the rainiest coastal areas in Hawaii. After any significant rainfall, wait at least 72 hours before ocean swimming. The Wailua River drains a massive watershed and can carry significant bacteria loads during storms.
