Whale & Shark Awareness — Seasonal
Olowalu's offshore waters are a whale calving area and historically have higher shark activity. Follow posted advisories and avoid swimming at dawn, dusk, or after heavy rain. Never swim alone in open water here.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Agricultural runoff from the Olowalu Valley can affect water quality after heavy rain. Wait 72 hours and until water clears before snorkeling.

Historical Bacteria Risk

Low Risk 2 / 5

Olowalu Beach features one of Maui's most pristine fringing coral reefs, stretching hundreds of yards offshore in shallow 3–15 foot depths. Water quality is generally excellent on days without recent rainfall. The reef acts as a natural buffer, filtering sediment before it reaches snorkeling areas.

The Olowalu Valley behind the beach has some agricultural use, which can contribute runoff after heavy rain. The area receives less rain than central and east Maui, keeping water quality good during most visits. This is one of the few Maui beaches with consistent, shallow snorkeling accessible directly from shore.

Based on: Fringing reef system, some agricultural watershed, typical dry West Maui climate

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

Stay out for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Olowalu Valley runoff can temporarily cloud the reef and elevate bacteria counts. The reef usually recovers quickly as West Maui's normally dry climate limits prolonged rain events.
