Water quality at Keauhou Bay
The Outrigger Kona Resort is in the Keauhou area, on a rocky lava coastline south of Kailua-Kona. Keauhou Bay is a small boat harbor and snorkeling spot rather than a sandy beach. Water quality in the bay can be affected by nearshore groundwater seepage (common along the Kona coast) which carries nutrients. After rain, runoff from the upslope coffee farms and residential areas can temporarily degrade water quality. The bay itself has good snorkeling when conditions are clear.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain, even if the water looks clear. Bacteria and pollutants from runoff can linger in the water longer than the brown color does.
If the ocean near Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa turns brown or murky after rain, do not enter the water. Brown water carries bacteria, pollutants, and sediment from runoff.
