Moderate Risk 2 / 5

The Outrigger Reef on the Beach is a true beachfront property on the central Waikiki strip, between Fort DeRussy and the main Waikiki commercial area. It occupies a slightly better position than the Hilton Hawaiian Village to the west but the same shoreline as the Royal Hawaiian and Moana Surfrider to the east.

Water quality at the Outrigger Reef reflects the Ala Wai Canal risk that affects all of Waikiki. On dry sunny days the water is typically within acceptable bacteria limits. After significant rain, the Ala Wai discharges pollutants that can spike bacteria counts along this entire shoreline for 48–72 hours.

The good news: this section of Waikiki Beach is generally clear, calm, and excellent for swimming when the weather has been dry.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Even after the water clears visually, bacteria can remain elevated along the Waikiki shoreline.
