Moderate-Low Risk 2 / 5

The Sheraton Waikiki is located on the central section of Waikiki Beach, fronting some of the most famous ocean real estate in the world. During normal dry weather, Waikiki Beach has moderate-low bacteria risk — the offshore reef helps buffer the beach, and DOH monitoring is regular.

The primary water quality risk is the Ala Wai Canal, which discharges at the western end of Waikiki. After heavy rain, bacteria-laden urban runoff from this canal spreads eastward along the beach. DOH advisories for Waikiki are more common than for cleaner beaches like Kailua or Maui's South Shore.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

Stay out for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Waikiki is particularly vulnerable to Ala Wai Canal runoff. When water near the canal mouth or along the beach appears brown, stay out — regardless of whether a formal advisory is posted.
