Water quality, conditions, and what to know before you go
The four man-made lagoons at Ko Olina are specifically designed for safe, calm swimming. Protected from waves and currents, with gradually sloping sand bottoms. One of the safest ocean swimming environments in Hawaii for children.
The semi-enclosed lagoon design limits natural water exchange, which can allow bacteria to linger after rare rain events. However, the dry leeward coast receives minimal rainfall. Water quality is generally excellent.
No public lifeguards at Ko Olina lagoons. The resort provides some beach attendants. Parents should maintain close supervision. The calm, enclosed water reduces drowning risk compared to open-coast beaches.
Resort-grade facilities including restrooms, showers, dining, and shade structures. Lagoon 4 is the most public-accessible. Parking is limited and fills early at the public lagoons.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. This applies to all ocean activities including swimming with kids. Runoff carries bacteria from land into nearshore waters.
When conditions are clear, Ko Olina Lagoons has great options for swimming with kids. Check the water quality above, then book with confidence.
